Many children in the streets and slums of Kolkata never go to school. If they can, they often lack the material or social prerequisites to be able to learn properly. Without education, these children have little chance of escaping the poverty trap.

The aim of Calcutta Rescue's programs is not to replace the existing education system, but to support the children during their school and university years by providing them with a supportive learning environment. Among other things, all pupils receive two meals a day, medical care and clothing and are given social support by specialists.

School No. 10

School No. 10 is housed in a two-story building (weather permitting, the roof is used as a third "floor") and is located in the heart of the red light district in Nimtala, near Girish Park.

The school has space for over 300 pupils, the majority of whom are children in secondary school, many of kindergarten age and boarding pupils for children who can no longer live at home.

Sean Duggan, a member of Calcutta Rescue's English support group, also visited Calcutta Rescue's School No. 10 during his stay in Kolkata in February 2017. He wrote a very illustrated report about it as part of a series of texts entitled "I witness".

We are currently renovating a residential building in Hatibagan so that we can move our School No. 10 there.

This school is housed in an extension to our Talapark Clinic and is attended by over 150 pupils. These include kindergarteners, children in the secondary school and boarders. The school has an additional room nearby which is used as a computer training center.
