Special Cases – Sujit (30)

30 years old Sujit Karmakar is a patient of Calcutta Rescue’s Talapark clinic and is a case of Renal disorder. Sujit had undergone a kidney transplant in February 2009 when his father was the donor.

In 2008 Sujit started suffering from skin pigmentation. Dark patches were forming on his skin. He visited a local doctor who advised him to consult a dermatologist. He then went to Vellore, in Tamil Nadu for treatment. At Vellore he was put through a number of tests and was then diagnosed with Right Kidney Hypertension and was Hepatitis B+.

He underwent a kidney transplant surgery. His father was the donor. He was on dialysis till February 2009. Presently he needs life long supportive medications for his treatment. He is now under the following medications:

  • Cyclosporin
  • Prednisone
  • Azron
  • Losarton
  • Metoprolol
  • Amlodipine
  • Famotadine

The total cost of his treatment is Rs. 3142.72/-.
Sujit used to work in the Merchant Navy before he fell ill. For his kidney transplant he arranged the money by taking loans and some help was given to him from the Government fund and local health clubs.

He lives in the district of Nadia with his parents and brother. They live in a small one roomed house with a tin roof, bathroom and gets water from a public water pump. They have electricity. The house is being run with the earnings of his father and brother. Together they earn around Rs. 2500 – Rs. 3000 per month. He also has an elder brother who is married and lives separately helping them out sometimes.

Sujit feels very weak as a result he is unable to do any work. However now he is training himself in mobile phone repairing so that he can help out in the family even if it is in a small way.

He is feeling much better now and has gained body weight. He now weighs around 61 kilos. A few weeks back he started suffering from severe abdomen
pain. After a few tests he was detected with gal bladder stones. He was put on medications to dissolve the stone which was successful. Now he is much
better.

“I’m not sure whether I will ever be able to live a normal life again. However I just want to get stronger so that I’m able to help out my father and brother.
IT has been a huge weight on them and I want to ease that weight”, says Sujit.
